WHY AM I SO TIRED
I have heard this question posed so many times in the last few weeks. “I am exhausted. At the end of the day I just feel so wiped out. Technically I have more time in my day because I don’t commute but I am exhausted.” Of course you are – this is all new stuff!
For many, working remotely offers the chance to sleep later as they don’t commute to work and they get home from work earlier as they only have to walk downstairs. Yet most of us feel more tired at the end of the day than ever before. That is likely a function of two key things – one we are all under an incredible level of stress – that’s obvious. Less obvious is the amount of energy it requires to do something you have always done, in a new way. From getting groceries to planning meals to doing our jobs, there is no muscle memory for how we are going through our days and it is exhausting.
What is the solution? First, recognize that in this environment, we are all relearning our approach to many, many things and that takes energy. Second, hold the judgement and instead turn it around to appreciate what you are accomplishing. Realize you have evolved your way of working, learned new ways of managing your home or you even learned new, valuable skills. Sit back and appreciate these accomplishments and all the effort it is taking to do that. Honoring the challenges you have faced and appreciating your efforts can be a great renewal exercise – as can sharing your experience with others……What was the toughest part initially about working remotely? How did you manage through that?
