Invest in Yourself in 2021
The start of the New Year is when many of us determine to reset our priorities. These resolutions often reflect our desire to live healthier and more fulfilling lives – to be better leaders or make a major life change. The challenge is that wanting these things is not the same as actually getting them. Too often the judgments, expectations and limitations we place on ourselves – stories we speak inside our own minds, can sabotage our journey towards what we truly desire.
What would it be like to make a commitment to invest in yourself this year – invest in becoming your own best storyteller? Lasting change takes work, but the result is a sense of authenticity, empowerment and accomplishment that you own. Make the shifts that are needed to remove the roadblocks impeding your journey so you can drive forward with confidence and clarity. Become a stronger leader who is inspiring, empowering, and has a vision to meet the challenges facing your organization. Find the courage to grow, step into that promotion, or leave the job that is dragging you down and fueling a feeling of being stuck. Become what you want to see as your very best self.
The very first step on this journey is to look inside. As a coach, I listen to my clients to hear their internal narrative. Is what you say you want really what brings you satisfaction or happiness? Are the actions you are taking, supporting the results you are seeking? For example, as a leader how do you show up? Do you say you want to empower your team, but you give such specific requirements you are actually a micro manager? Have the courage to explore how fears and insecurities are driving behaviors that are not serving you. Is striving for that next promotion really going to deliver the kind of life you aspire to? Perhaps what you truly want vs. what you think you want, is impacting your actions or preventing the results you seek. By exploring and understanding how your thoughts are impacting your behaviors, you can initiate a path forward that shifts the narrative and delivers results.
This journey takes courage but is well worth the efforts. Look internally and think about how you speak to yourself. What are you saying and what tone do you use towards yourself? Is it the same way you would encourage a good friend, a coworker or a child? Where do those stories come from and how are they serving you?
As 2021 unfolds commit to you. What do you need to do to change your story and map your journey forward? I’m inviting you to look inside, and together we can find the best story of you for 2021.
