HOW ARE YOU USING YOUR COMMUTE TIME?

Crazy question? Not really!

While we are enjoying the time working from home offers, commuting serves a greater purpose than physically moving us from one place to other. It also mentally moves us. Now that commuting is walking into another room, how are you managing the mental shift to move from “home life” to “work life"? What have you given up that fueled you, now that you don’t drive, or walk or take a train?

One of my coaching clients used to call her sister on her drive home and now can’t find the time. Another listened to a podcast and now just works longer. Shifts in behavior can be costly as they are rituals that grounded routines, restored energy and created mind space.

While it doesn’t need to be two hours a day, a routine that enables you to mentally shift from one world to the other is restorative. It doesn’t mean you won’t take calls at home at night or answer emails after hours, it just means you will do that, having made the mental shift that it is “after hours” work.

One client determined to end their regular day by walking outside, sitting in their car, taking some deep breaths and then walking back inside “arriving home” from the office.
