ANCHORING ON WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A COMMUNITY
The Fourth of July is my favorite holiday, closely followed by Thanksgiving. Both days share simple pleasures – gathering with family and friends, enjoying great meals and sharing gratitude for the many gifts in our lives. What I love most is the joy of community – the feeling of fellowship.
As a nation, we face many headwinds as we step into this holiday. The escalation of COVID infections, the spotlight of racial inequality and the uncertainty of our economy weigh heavy. No doubt this year our celebrations will be smaller and void of some traditional fanfare. But we can still step back and anchor ourselves in what it means to be a community. We can take actions that consider the common good. We can do the things we must to keep each other healthy and safe. We can work towards lifting each other up and believing in the best we have to offer. We can remember the ideal of “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness,” the very essence of our nation’s founding. We can work towards realizing these ideals equally.
That is what and how I will be celebrating this year. How about you?
